What is PCOS?

PCOS is a common and ancient hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age. It has a varying constellation of symptoms and no known cause. Women with PCOS usually have one or more of the following: irregular or absent periods, excess androgen levels, and polycystic ovaries. Excess androgen levels often cause excessive hair growth (hirsutism), acne, baldness, and weight gain. Polycystic ovaries are enlarged ovaries with multiple immature follicles that may not release regularly, which can cause ovulation and fertility issues. Often, chronic stress and inflammation come into play. In PCOS cases, the hormone progesterone is suppressed, and both estrogen and and androgens (male hormones) are elevated.

How does Spearmint help PCOS?

Drinking a Spearmint tea like Spearmint and White Peony regularly for several months will significantly lower androgen levels in women with PCOS. It can reduce hormonal acne lesions as effectively as minocycline, without the antibiotic’s side effects. Spearmint lowers free and total testosterone levels by increasing androgen metabolism and boosting sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). Menthol is also reduces testosterone levels in women with high levels of androgens. Spearmint reduces ovarian cysts and increases corpus luteum count by increasing luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This special mint also increases the number of healthy, ovulation-ready follicles (Graafian follicles). All of this helps restore the natural ovulatory rhythm and improves fertility in women with PCOS.

Anti-Inflammatory Spearmint

Spearmint is rich in phenolic compounds like rosmarinic acid that have potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This combats the chronic inflammation often at play in PCOS patients. Inflammation contributes to insulin resistance, hormone disruption, and damage to ovarian tissue.

Digestion Support

Women with PCOS often experience gastrointestinal issues like painful abdominal cramps due to impaired digestion. As an aromatic carminative, Spearmint is strongly antispasmodic and analgesic. It relaxes and settles the digestive system, reducing gas, bloating, and painful cramping from conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) which have been potentially linked to PCOS.

Spearmint Improves Mood

Women with PCOS are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and mood swings, partly due to hormonal imbalances and partly due to the psychological burden of symptoms like acne, hirsutism, poor digestion, and infertility. Spearmint tea reduces stress and improves mood through its gently sedative effect. It is a nervine, relaxing the central nervous system  The tea promotes perspiration and acts as a vasodilator, imparting relaxation and a warm glow to the drinker. Spearmint has both cooling and warming aspects.  Spearmint and White Peony tea is a harmonizing tea blended by herbalists who understand PCOS and digestion.

The Oldest Mint

Spearmint is a member of the Lamiaceae (mint) family. It is very aromatic with tubular flowers that can be pink, purple, or white. Spearmint leaves are opposite, serrated, and lance-shaped leaves, and its stem is square. The plant grows one to two feet tall. People believe Spearmint is the oldest variation of all mints. Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is a hybrid of spearmint and watermint (Mentha aquatica). It is gentler and less stimulating than peppermint due to its lower menthol content, and so is the preferred mint for children and elders.
